Prambanan Temple is located near Jogjakarta. According to legend, This temple was built upon request from a princess named Roro Jonggrang asked for a Thousand Temples in one night as a condition for Bandung Bandawasa who wants to propose to her. Through the help of genies, Bandung Bandawasa was able to complete a thousand temples which were ultimately thwarted by Rara Jonggrang.
Knowing the cheating committed by Rara Jonggrang, Bandung Bandawasa was angry and condemned Rara Jonggrang to be the last statue of a thousand temples which he built in one night.
But different from the description on the writings on the Wantil and Siwagrha Inscriptions, Prambanan Temple was built by King Rakai Pikatan who was then the King of Ancient Mataram from the Sanjaya Dynasty. The construction itself began in 850 AD, then continued by King Balitung Maha Sambu during the Medang Kingdom of Mataram.
This temple was built to worship the Lord Shiva, who is the highest God of the Hindus.
